Why do we give candy and chocolate on Halloween?
Old Celtic and medieval customs in which people would go door to door offering performances in exchange for food, are the origins of trick-or-treating. Children dressed up in costumes and went door to door begging for candy during the 20th century, particularly in the United States.
By the 1920s and 1930s, candy manufacturers began promoting their products as the perfect treat for trick-or-treaters. But the real candy boom during Halloween didn't happen until after World War II, when sugar rationing was lifted.
Why Chocolate Specifically?
Popularity: Chocolate is one of the most loved treats across all ages.
Convenience: It’s pre-packaged, easy to hand out, and has a longer shelf life.
Marketing: Big brands like Hershey’s, Mars, and Nestlé heavily marketed chocolate as the perfect Halloween treat from the 1950s onward.
Mini Versions: Fun-sized chocolate bars became widespread, making it even easier for households to participate in Halloween giving.
So, chocolate became the go-to treat because it’s delicious, safe, easy to distribute and because candy companies made sure it stayed at the center of Halloween celebrations.
